About the NYC KIDS Survey

The New York City KIDS Survey (NYC KIDS) collects data on the health of children and gives New Yorkers a voice when it comes to improving the health of children in their neighborhood. It is conducted by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The survey helps the Health Department:

  • Understand and address the health care needs of children
  • Understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and families
  • Improve the health of children
  • Figure out how to spend tax dollars on programs and services for children

NYC KIDS gives the Health Department a better idea of the range of child risk factors, including COVID-19, that occur at the borough and city level. For many of the issues, we have no other way of knowing there is a problem without asking about it.

New York City households are randomly selected for the survey from birth certificate or public school records.

If you were selected to be part of the New York City KIDS Survey and agree to participate, you will play a big role in representing your borough and New York City as a whole. Your participation is voluntary and all your answers will be confidential.

Abt Associates, a national research organization, is currently collecting the New York City KIDS Survey data for the Health Department.

Fact Sheet (PDF)

What is the NYC KIDS Survey? What will the survey ask me?

The NYC KIDS survey asks about the health, diet, behaviors, impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and access to health care of a child who lives or stays with you. Participation is voluntary; you may skip any question or stop the survey at any time. However, answering all of the questions will help the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (Health Department) improve the health of children in NYC.

Can I complete the survey in other ways than on the Internet?

If you prefer to complete the survey over the phone, you can call 833-866-7945 and complete the survey with a trained interviewer from Abt Associates.

The survey is also available in Spanish and Chinese. Use the dropdown at the top of this page for information about the survey in these languages.

Do you ask personal questions?

Many of the questions are about the child's personal health. Although some people find that some answers may be difficult to share, we have no other way of knowing if a problem exists without asking about it. Your confidential answers help the NYC Health Department understand and address the health care needs of NYC children.

How did you get my address?

Your address was randomly chosen from either NYC birth certificates or New York City public school records. We do not have access to your child or children’s name, or other personal information.
